It was strike day for the spring play in high school. I was young, only 15. I had plenty of time to make a fool of myself yet. But, this would be a good example, nonetheless. We had done all the striking of the set there was to be done. It was a Sunday afternoon and it was relatively cool outside, but kind of a nice spring day. I had recently made a habit of climbing on the hoods of cars when they were trying to leave a parking lot and yelling or singing at my friends in the car and causing a big, ridiculous scene in the name of laughter. This day was like no other in that regard. The car came rolling around the circle drive and I hopped on the hood. I was wearing a Tee-shirt, blue jeans, penny loafers and had a wooden cane in hand that I had used for one of my roles in the play. I don't recall for sure what I was doing on the hood, probably screaming and being annoying. The car than began to drive and I turned and layed on the hood of the car with cane in hand, legs crossed, looking relaxed and fine. And I was. The girl driving the car began driving up the long drive that lead to the road and I thought to myself, I'm done. And with that, I slowly and gently slide my legs off the side of the car and went into a standing position. Well... I tried to. Turned out she was going about 25 miles per hour. As soon as my feet hit the pavement, my feet were above my head and I hit the ground. I was rolling for about 10 feet. I finally came to a stop and I sat up and shook it off. I looked at myself and I had scraped an elbow and shoulder. But, amazingly there were no damages. Though my head hit the pavement once and that kinda gave me a killer headache. As I rose to my feet, the car came flying up and stopped, she jumped out of the car freaking out. People were running across the parking lot. Everybody was freaked, but I was fine. A couple of scratches. And somehow I never lost my cane, it was still in my hand. Now, when I watch the part in the movies where the hero jumps or gets kicked out of the car and rolls across the pavement, I cringe a bit. I know that feeling. It ain't a pretty feeling to roll.
