“I got it Juan.” Cesar told his friend. “You got the map! The map to El Dorado?” “Hush or they’ll get us.” “Fine lets go,” Juan whispered and pointed towards the dock where a fully stocked ship was. Juan and Cesar were Spanish men. They were poor and lived on the streets. They were very clever too. They sneaked across the city onto the boat where they would be on their way to the City of Gold. Juan untied the rope and pushed the large boat out to sea and, with the help of Cesar, quickly got on board. “Ha! We’re going to be rich beyond our wildest dreams!” Juan said while dancing around the ship. “We should get some shut eye Juan,” the cautious man said.
“Fine have it your way. Lets sleep in the captains quarters. They always have the nicest beds. *** The two men woke up to the sound of waves splashing everywhere. As they rushed on deck the slid around it because it was wet from a large storm that had appeared. “Juan we’re in the midst of a large storm. We could be blown off course or worse sink!” “That isn’t our only problem! Look behind us. Its Julio’s other ship. He’s coming back for the map and his ship!” Juan said in a matter-of-fact tone of voice. The storm was horrible. The ships were almost on their sides. Julio’s ship was approaching quickly because Cesar and Juan’s ship didn’t have a crew to man the sails. “What we going to do!?! We’re going slow, and this storm is horrible,” Juan said. “I think I know...” Cesar said while running to the wheel he made a sharp turn to the right and kept going that way. “Why’d you do that?!” “We can lose them if we go off course!” “I guess this will work,” Juan said unsurely, “But we turn back tomorrow this time.” “Yea yea yea. We’re almost out of the storm.” “Juan! I was looking at the map, were almost there. When we hit land we have to walk a little ways until we reach the entrance stone.” “Finally! You know, I’ve been getting rather sick on this boat.” As night fell the Spaniards fell asleep and woke up to a clear sky. Juan moved the wheel to the left to get back on course. A few hours later Juan saw a mountain in the distance. “LAND! We’re almost there! We’re almost to the city of gold! I see LAND!” the overly excited man kept repeating. As a few more hours past the boat hit land and Juan jumped off. He jumped right back on when he saw a bunch of skulls and rusty and dusty old swords. “Cesar lets go this beach is creeping me out.” “Fine take a sword, we may need them.” The men took a sword and wandered though the jungle. When the reached a stone it was dusk and the slept up in a tree right near it. When they woke up they tried to figure it out. They pushed it, pulled it, and tried to lift it but it weighed more than they could lift. “Well that’s nice. The map lead us to a big giant ROCK!” “I’m going to shower under that waterfall.” “Fine,” Cesar said. As Juan was showering he discovered a cave behind the water fall. “Cesar come quick!” he exclaimed, “I think I found the entrance to El Dorado! Juan and Cesar went into the cave and swam across the water to the other side. When they reached it they saw a large shining city. It was shining because it was gold… “Juan lets go to the head chief. Maybe they’ll think we’re gods!” “Ok but then we’ll have to walk slowly and stand tall.” Then men walked by and all of the children and even adults stared. The head chief ran up to them and greeted them. “Welcome newcomers! Are you the gods the prophecy told us about?” the deep voiced man asked. “Yes we are! I am Cesar and this is Juan,” he said in a powerful voice. Just then a thin man came up. “I am the priest. I welcome you gods. Do you want to have the celebration tonight?” “Yes. We will accept any offering or gifts.” *** “Let the ceremony begin!” the high priest shouted. As beautiful women and hansom men walked it the only thing the Spaniards noticed was the gold they were carrying and putting at their feet. They picked it up and carried it back to their room which was carved of solid gold also. As they looked out onto the city they saw gold, gold and more gold… They had found El Dorado. A week had gone by and the Spaniards had gotten quite comfortable. “Juan, lets leave. Take the gold with us, and we’ll be rich!” “What? No! I love this place and these people. We can’t just leave them like that. And robbing them blind too!” Juan exclaimed angrily. “Is there a problem, sirs?” the rather chunky chief asked suspiciously. “Um… well you see-” “Yes! We must leave soon,” Cesar butted in quickly, “We need to take the gold up to the Mountain of the Gods.” The chief nodded and went the carpenters to build a ship to hold the gold as they left the cave. It took about three days for them to finish the ship. When they did it was the biggest and greatest ship the Spaniards had ever seen. “This is great!” Cesar and Juan said at the same time. “Then we will load up the gold and we will let you on your way with one final ceremony,” the chief said with a smile. When the gold was loaded onto the ship and the men were ready the chief gave the signal the people of El Dorado pulled the ropes to open up the water way. But suddenly Juan yelled out, “We aren’t gods! We tricked you and robbed you, I’m so sorry.” When they were almost out and the men and women dropped the ropes and the blocks of wood hit the boat and flung the men overboard and the gold out of the cave. The waves formed by the heavy wood on the water caused the men to be pushed out of the cave as it collapsed on their gold. “Well… now what? We have to go back I suppose,” Juan inquired. The men walk back to the ship and climbed on board and set sail. It took them two days and there were no storms on the way. On their ship though, they discovered a lot of gold. “We’re RICH! Now Juan someone left this here for us.” “Yes… they did.” Little did they know but the citizens of El Dorado knew they weren’t gods and left this here for them so they wouldn’t be completely gold-less… Copyright 2008 Marisa Herrera |
