The sky was dark and unpromising; the date was February 12. A small gathering of Indians had formed on the bank of the Grand River. Their annual ritual was going to take a sudden and unexpected twist. The Ojibwa Indians celebrated their own new year but not when everybody else did. "Mom, do I have to?" I moaned. "Yes! This will be good for you," my mom screamed. "Why do I have to be some dumb councilor to a bunch of kids at a camp?" I groaned. "Because you were invited and you need to get out this god forsaken house," she snapped. I slogged into my bedroom and got my luggage and walked to the school where I was going to ride a bumpy bus for three hours and go out to the middle of nowhere. I got to the school and walked into the gym. There was a line that led to a small table, with a lady checking names off a list. "Name?" the lady asked. " Yea... Matt Baran. I'm one of the counselors," I said. "Okay, take your things and board the bus, please," the woman said. I grabbed my stuff and waddled to the bus. When I got on, I was surprised to see my good friend Jake. "Hey! I didn't know you were coming here," I said. "Yea, my mom and dad made me," He said. I sat down and watched the kids get into a line and get ready to board the bus. When they got on the bus and sat down, we were off. After a headpounding three hours, we were at camp. Jake and I went to the registration office and were assigned to our cabin. Later that night I walked down to the lake and gazed at the moon light haze winding through the forest and tuning to mist on the warm water. In the woods I heard ruffling and squinted my eyes to see what was there. I looked hard and saw a huge shaggy haired creature running in the forest. I stepped back and was turning to run when I tripped on a log and hit my head on a rock... ... I woke up the next morning in my cabin with all of the kids staring at me. "Can I help you?" I asked. "Are you our cabin leader?" asked one of the kids. "Ummmm... Yea, I'm Matt and you probably met Jake already. Hey... where did Jake Go anyway?" I gurgled and scratched my head and felt a big knot from where I fell. "He had to go to the office to get a list of things that we can do today," the same kid replied. "Uhh... Who are you?" I asked. "I'm Nejo," the boy said. Something about the boy stuck out to me. He had sandy brown hair, hazel eyes, a small scar on his left cheek. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I felt like I knew him. I got up and walked out of the cabin into the fresh northern air. It swept over my body and was soothing, like relaxing in a hot tub minus the hot and sweaty water. I walked to the office with the kids and met up with Jake. "Dude... What happened to me last night? My head feels like a hurricane," I said. "Yea well you had pretty hard fall last night, and were blacked out all night," He laughed. "Hahaha! Very funny! Laugh at the injured kid," I goofed. Jake and I took the kids to the lake and let them swim and play on the giant water trampoline. They had about an hour before they had to meet up with the other campers for lunch and then some kind of activity with the camp leader, Barbra. When we took the kids to the auditorium for lunch Barbra asked to talk to me. "Are you okay? Your head looked pretty bad last night," She said. "Yea, well... I feel good. But really I'm kind of freaked out by this weird animal I saw last night. It had this really shaggy fur and was huge like a bear. I could feel it running and its feet pounding on the ground," I whispered. "Are there bear up here?'' "I don't think so, but you never know," Barbra said. "Well I have to go supervise lunch and make sure there aren't any food fights." Jake and I walked back to the cabin and I plopped onto the bed. "So do you know what classes you have yet," Jake asked. "Yea. I got biology, physics, math 3, and trig," I replied. "Oh yea I also have economics and Michigan history." "Cool, we have trig and economics together," Jake said. I lay on my bed and just gazed at the ceiling, until Jake and I were startled by an ear splitting screech. We covered our ears and ran out of the cabin. We looked around and saw nothing. Then in the woods we saw it... Standing about seven feet tall, with big shaggy hair and glowing green eyes. The creature looked like a dog but was able to stand on two legs. It got down on four legs and every thing got quiet. It stayed there looking at me. Its eyes were locked into mine and I could feel it eating away at my body. My legs began to weaken, my vision blurred, my muscles were getting heavy and I crumbled to the ground. Jake rushed over to me and shouted my name. I seen the beast run at Jake and send him hurdling backwards into a stack of logs. The thing ran to me and bit my leg. I could feel its sharp teeth dig into my flesh and the violent grip of its mouth felt like my ankle was being slammed into a door and was then violently ripped off. I screamed in pain and was fighting for what could happen. I couldn't move... Copyright 2008 Matt |
