"Daddy, where's Mommy?" little eight-year-old Danny asked. "Oh, well, me and Mommy had a fight last night. She's staying at a hotel. She'll be back soon." Dad assured. Danny carried his lunch onto the bus. It reeked of something. What lunch could smell so bad? Danny wanted to see what was inside, but Dad said not until lunch. So Danny listened to his father. Danny waited the entire school day. Then the teacher said something. "Class," the teacher said, rising from her seat. "Time for lunch." Danny took his bag lunch out of his little cubby and took it down to the cafeteria. Jake Bartlett had a ham sandwich. Becca Jenner had some tuna fish casserole. But what did Danny have? It smelled of dead ferret. But it couldn't be a dead ferret. Right? Just as Danny was about to check his lunch, his best friend Tommy asked him a question. "Danny, what's in your lunch? It smells like dog mess or something." Tommy gagged a little. Danny reached inside, and felt a head. A human head. He screamed so loud, they say one kid became deaf. Danny now knew where his mother was. She wasn't in a hotel. She wasn't in heaven, either. She was in Danny's lunch box... Danny woke up from his horrible dream. It was time for school. When he came down to the kitchen, he saw his dad and his mom. "Hi, Mommy." Danny said. Mom greeted her son. "Daddy," Danny said. "Where's Aunt Helen?" Aunt Helen just got out of a marrage and currently was living in Danny's house. "Oh, well, me and Aunt Helen had a fight last night. She's staying at a hotel. She'll be back soon." Danny knew that this was way too familiar. "Hey, Danny. Don't you want your lunch?" Dad asked. "Nah," Danny said. "I'll think I'll buy today..." Copyright 2008 Robbie |
