The sky was clear and bright without a cloud in sight. Blue-green water glistened as the sun wrapped around Mackinaw City like a blanket of shimmering gold. After three long years of construction the bridge was finally open. It was used as a "wedding ring" to the long engaged peninsulas. With an estimated weight of about 66,500 tons and a length of 26,444 feet, the bridge was mighty. Also known as the "Mighty Mac", it was anchored to the ground 206 feet below the waters surface, and Its towers stretched 552 feet above the waters surface. The creator of the bridge, Dr. David B. Steinman, looked at the bridge as the crowning achievement of his career. He was proud of the bridge but did not know what was to come. He didn’t know that under the straights there was great evil at work. He didn’t know that years before, Captain Degenerous Leadson and his crew of ghastly pirates had went down in the very spot where the bridge has been built. Jerry was a 14 year old boy who had grown up in Mackinaw City. He stood in the crowd and gazed at the bridge. Suddenly, the ground shook, the sky went black, and green lightening crawled across the sky. An old pirate ship slowly emerged underneath the bridge, and as it rose cables snapped and pavement crumbled. The crowed watched as the "Mighty Mac" disappeared into cold blue-green depths of Lake Michigan, and the pirate ship vanished in an eerie fog as it sailed toward the Upper Peninsula. "What was that!" Jerry yelled. "My bridge, my beautiful bridge. Three years of work! Its ruined!" Dr. Steinman exclaimed. The crowd slowly grew small and day turned into night. "Jerry, where are we going?" Toby asked as they ran toward Bridge View Park. "We have to see if that ship is going to come back." Jerry murmured . The two boys got to the park only to stop and hear what was being said by the eerie ghosts on the beach. "Tomorrow we blow up the town," one of the ghosts shouted. "Yeah!" they all yelled. "No, no, no, we need to do something much worse. We should take prisoners of all the townsfolk, then drown them one by one." snarled one pirate. "That’ll be real good! We can then have the town to ourselves." A tall ghost with worn leather boots cheered. "Do you hear that?" Toby asked. "Do you see that?" Jerry gasped. "What’d we do know?" Toby mumbled. "We hide, we wait for them to get what they want. When they have everybody we strike," Jerry whispered. The next day Jerry woke up and called Toby and they rushed back to the town park. "Okay, what do we do now?" Toby asked. "We go to the little shop in St. Ignace," Jerry replied. A storm was raging when they arrived in St. Ignace. Lightening crackled and thunder rolled. They walked in slushy puddles to a little shop in the back woods. "What is this place?" Toby asked. "It’s a magic shop. My dad brought me here when I was little." Jerry replied. "Can I help you?" an old woman asked. "Yeah, do you have anything that can send a ghost back to where it came from?" Jerry asked. "I have just the thing, but be warned, this is powerful magic. It should not be taken for granted." the old woman said. She gave Jerry a big black book and the boys walked out. The boys silently crept back to Mackinaw. "How do you know that this’ll work?" Toby asked. "I used to study the black arts," Jerry replied. "Okay, but this’ll be risky," Toby said. The storm had reached the town and was raging. "God of Darkness, Jericho, bring to me the darkness I desire, Bring it to me! Give it!" Jerry chanted. The ground shook and the writing from the book Jerry read from crawled like a snake up his arm. "Whoa…what’s happening to you?" Toby stuttered. The magic had entered Jerry’s body, changing his blonde hair and blue eyes coal black. The power had completely erased all the humanity in his body. He gazed at the lightining crackling around his body. "The power, it feels good. Now I can rule!" Jerry exclaimed. "W-here are we going?" Toby asked. "You are going nowhere, I’m going to destroy the pirates," Jerry snickered. Jerry raised his hand at Toby and shot out a purple and black light. Toby Fell to the ground and lay still. "Now, where are my pirates?" Jerry snapped. Jerry walked out into the pouring rain and headed toward the beach. The wind was blowing and thunder rumbled. "Rise!" Jerry commanded. He moved his hand and the Mackinaw Bridge rose from the murky depths of the lake as if nothing had happened. "Who fixed it?" a voice shouted. The pirate ship sailed through the rain to the shore. The ghosts of 325 pirates came ashore. "Dust." Jerry whispered. All the pirates froze and fell to the ground. They had been turned to dust. "What? You destroyed my crew! How? Where did you get this magic? Never mind that! I’ll have to kill you." Degenerous shouted. "Burn." Jerry murmured. A blaze of fire wrapped around Degenerous. He slapped it away. Jerry shot an Electric bolt at him. Degenerous grabbed it and threw it back at Jerry. Jerry grabbed it and crushed it in his hands. "Sunlight." Jerry shouted. The rain stopped and the sun shone bright on the ghost ship. Jerry heard a gasp and turned to see Toby standing in his shadow. "Nooooooo" Degeenerous cried as he burst into flames and disappeared. "W-what did you do?" Toby asked. "You’re not dead." Jerry snapped. "No, what…how did you get so much power?" Toby asked. "Bored now!" Jerry exclaimed. "Wait, what are you doing?" Toby yelled. "Ending the world," Jerry responded. Jerry began chanting. An enormous tower shot upward from the ground. "Good," Jerry shouted. A big red vortex opened at the bottom of the tower. "What is this," Toby shouted over the roar of the vortex. "It’s going to suck the world into the nether realms." Jerry shouted back. The vortex was begining to suck the world in. Toby dodged a picnic table and a trash can. the was vicious. The bridge was begining to be sucked in as a cable snapped. "No," shouted Toby. He ran to the vortex. It was shooting out lightening. A stray bolt hit Jerry. It took his power and he fell to the ground. Toby looked back at Jerry and whispered "Goodbye." He ran into the vortex and it shut behind him. The tower sunk back into the sand. Jerry looked up and shouted, "Toby, nooo!" All was silent. Jerry got up and walked to town. He went to his room and plopped Down. A few nights later he was dreaming. "Jerry, why’d you do it?" a voice called. "You trapped me here," the voice murmured. Jerry sat up and knew what he had to do... Copyright 2008 Matt |
