Part II:  Outbreak

A Story Written By:

Chase Merkley

“America faces the worst of fear,” the President says on all the television stations.  “We ask that if you are not infected, that you get far away from the country as we try to demolish the plague that haunts our country.  We have been informed by the doctors of what this “disease” does.  It reaches in our bodies and makes its way into our blood.  They are still not sure how, but the parasite makes the blood boil to a certain degree to where you can not survive.  It infects the blood as well.  Ladies and Gentlemen,” the President says.  “I’m sorry to all of America.  God be with us all,” he says signing off.

He sat there in the dark.  He turned on his flashlight and quickly turned it off.  The door slowly began to open.  He turned on the light and shined it on the creaking door.  He woman’s face is shown.  She puts her arm and puts her hand in front of her face as the light blinds her.

“Dr. Ripley,” she says wanting him to turn off the blinding light.  She lowers her arm from her face and finds the light switch and flips it up.  The whole room lights up and we see Dr. Ripley sitting in a chair in the corner.  He stands and stares at the woman.

“There’s no cure Amanda,” he says walking towards her.  Amanda stands there and looks at him.

“Are you ready to speak sir?”  She asks.  Dr. Ripley walks to her and stares into her eyes.  He says nothing and walks out the door.  Amanda stands there and looks around the room before turning off the light.  “He’s on his way,” she says with one hand covering her ear and the other hand reaching for the light switch.  Darkness surrounds her as the door shuts.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Dr. Ripley,” the man at the podium says standing down.  People in the crowd stand and applaud Ripley as he walks out and stands in front of the podium.  People are shown a little more interested in what is behind Dr. Ripley.  Ripley turns around and sees a huge, blue cloth covering what looks like a huge box or some kind of cage.

“We will get to what is behind the cloth in a few moments ladies and gentlemen,” Dr. Ripley says nervously.  Before he can say another word, a person stands to speak.

“Did you find a cure Dr. Ripley?”  The young woman asks.  Everyone stop staring at her and quickly turn to Ripley to hear his response.  He stands there silent.  He lowers his head a little, but quickly raises it again and stares at the crowd.

“I have found out more about this parasite,” he says with confidence.  People continue to listen.  “The first person to go through the parasitic disease was a young man named Jacob Clemens,” Dr. Ripley says reading from his paper he has on the podium.  “To examine what and how the parasite did this horrific scene, we had to keep the body under freezing.  It took us six days to cool down the blood,” he says.  “On the seventh day, we found something extraordinary.  It seems that this parasite reproduces in the blood and that is what makes the blood contagious to anyone who comes in contact with it,” he says.  “This parasite is not from Africa just to clear up all the rumors,” he says.  “This is an American parasite without a doubt.  It’s been living in our sewage system.  We believe this thing came from the Southern region; probably in the lower part of Texas.  To study how the parasite kills, we had to study the humans who were infected.  It was by far the most disturbing I have ever seen in my lifetime,” he says.  The crowd is silence as they take in their worst fears.  “This parasite has been climbing in our pipes for years and years and finally came up to the surface.  It was hiding in a place where everyone goes everyday,” he says.  “It was hiding in our toilets or sinks in our bathroom.  When we would turn on the sink or sit down on the toilet, it would then sneak into our bodies.  It would either go into our mouth without us knowing it or go in,” he says and then pauses.  “I think you know where I was going with that second part,” he says.  “After studying the way he kills the host, we found the symptoms.  You begin feeling normal, and continue with your average life.  After an hour you begin to feel a little hot.  Of course, you won’t assume anything from it and go on with your life.  After hour two, you begin to sweat abnormally.  You begin to feel really hot inside your skin and it causes itchiness.  By hour three, you become completely out of your mind.  Your blood begins to boil to a certain degree.  The parasite is obviously stronger in warmer areas.  Our bodies are very warm inside and out.  As the parasite does it damage, he reproduces in the blood like I said earlier.  The blood begins to boil as the newly born parasites are born inside the blood.  As they want to leave the host to find their own host, the blood boils hotter and hotter to wear our outer skin begins to melt,” he says.  He looks around and sees some people becoming disgusted.  “I know this is disturbing to some of you and should be for all of you, but everyone must know what this thing does,” he says.  The last hour, hour four, is when the real pain begins.  Of course the hour can change due to how the human acts.  Some people are saying this is the end of the world.  Some are saying that this is a joke,” he says walking to the thing standing behind him.  He removes the cloth and shows a glassed cage with a woman inside crying.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he says.  “This is Katherine.  She became infected two and half hours ago,” he says.  Everyone stares and some stand to get a better view.  “Right now as I speak, there are about one hundred parasites inside of her about to wake up.  When they awake, they are going to want to leave her body.”  As Dr. Ripley knows, he sees cameras all around him.  He knows he is on most channels.  “For those of you who thinks this is a joke,” he says and pauses.  The woman screams in pain.  She stops suddenly and holds her chest.  She stands on her knees and continues to hold her chest crying.  “Does this look like a joke to you?”  He says looking in the camera.  The woman begin to puke horrifically everywhere in the glassed cage.  “The parasites are now waking up ladies and gentlemen and you will now learn what we are really dealing with here.”  The woman holds her head and screams in front of the worried crowd.  A line of blood slowly comes out of her eye.  She stops screaming loudly, but continues to breathe hard and shake constantly.  She gets ready to puke again.  She makes a gagging sound as blood pours of her mouth.  She screams as the hot blood comes out of her mouth.  Her gums begin to bleed from the hot blood inside her body.  Her teeth are slowly coming to loose for her and some begin to fall out as she is spitting out some more blood.  She falls quickly on her back and screams in more pain.  She lifts her back up and holds her chest once again.  Everyone in the crowd scream in horror.  Most turn away and tell Dr. Ripley to take her away.  “SOMEBODY PLEASE!”  She screams as blood begins to flow out of her fingernails.  Her feet begin to melt first.  Her two feet touch each other and mix with each other making her look somewhat deformed.  She screams wanting it to end.  She tries not to move, but the boiling blood inside her makes her turn and twist.  She tries to scream and give out one more cry, but her jaw can not handle the tortured body and begins to fall off, but hangs on with some tissue left.  She lifts her good arm up hoping; just hoping God will reach out to her and take her away.  Without any sign at all, her extended arm suddenly pops like a big pimple.  Her hand falls on the ground.  She looks as her face begins to melt slowly and sees her hand melting and her blood covering everything.  When her arm explodes, her blood squirts all over the glassed cage to where no one can see her as well anymore.  Everyone in the crowd just closes their eyes and just waits for the end to come.

“This is not a joke ladies and gentlemen,” he says.  “If God is real,” he says.  “He is pissed off,” he says walking off the stage to let them take it in.

Dr. Ripley lies in his bed that night.  He looks at his family in a photo standing right beside him on a dresser.  He sits up quickly to see the door opening.  He sees his daughter standing there holding the knob.  “Daddy,” she says.

“What is it Samantha?”  He says sitting out of bed.

“I don’t feel so good,” she says holding her tummy.  He quickly stands and runs to her.

“Oh no!  Honey why did you use the bathroom?”  He screams holding her.  He begins to cry.

“Daddy, I didn’t.  I’m just hungry,” she says.  He suddenly becomes embarrassed and looks at her.

“Michael!”  A woman calls for him.  Michael turns around.  “Where are you going?”  She asks.

“Where am I going?  Are you kidding?  My friend just died in there!  I can’t stay here and get infected!  I’m getting the hell out of here!”  He says freaking out.  She’s not surprised for him freaking out.

“Well, I’ll go with you,” she says.

“Amy, you can’t go with me,” he says.  “Did you even go to Cody’s funeral?  He cared so much for you and you used him,” he says walking off.  She stands there, but quickly runs after him.

“Well where are you going Michael?”

“Did you watch that doctor today on the television?  He knows what this thing does.  I’m going to find him to get some damn answers,” he says still walking.  She keeps his pace and walks with him.

“He said he doesn’t know a cure,” she says.

“He never said that.  He just didn’t answer that woman,” he says not looking at her.

“HEY!”  A U.S. soldier says making Michael and Amy stop.  “You can’t go this way.  President orders for everyone in the southern states to make their way more south,” he says.

“You want us to go to Mexico?”  Michael asks.  The soldier says nothing.  “**** that,” he says walking.  The soldier stops him by pointing his artillery at him.

“First of all sir,” the soldier says.  “Profanity use makes me sick.  Second…you make one more step, I will have to stop you with force,” he says taking the safety off.

“Are you allowed to shoot him?”  Amy asks.  The soldier says nothing and just stares at Michael.

“Hey John, are you ok?”  A soldier, behind the soldier staring at Michael, says to his teammate.  Suddenly John pukes blood furiously on the soldier who was asking John what was wrong.  The soldier looking at Michael turns around and sees the soldier that got blood on him screaming in pain.  All the soldiers surround John screaming what to do.  The man with blood on his face screams as his face begins to melt.  His face begins to melt inside his body.  The soldier that was with Michael turns and shoots the man dying to the melting face in the chest.  The man dies instantly.  He turns back around and sees the man puking on the ground shaking and screaming in pain.  He points his gun at him.  “Sorry…” he whispers and shoots him in the head.  Then he doesn’t take a chance and shoots him a few more times in the chest.  Michael and Amy stand in horror.  The soldier walks back to them.  Michael looks and sees a drip of blood on his cheek.  The soldier feels the tiny burn and wipes the blood away.

“I’m going to get you two to a safe place, ok?”  He says.

“I’m not going to Mexico, I need to see that Dr. Ripley,” Michael says.

“I understand,” the soldier says.  “I’ll get you there…” he finishes.

The jeep flies down the street dodging cars on fire, cars flipped over, and cars covered in skin and blood.

“My name is Connor,” the soldier says driving.  Michael, sitting in the passenger seat, says nothing.

“I’m Amy and that is Michael,” Amy says.

“So why do you need to see that doctor?”  Connor asks.

“I just do…” Michael says.  The jeep is silent.  Connor holds his stomach feeling a little cramped.

“I think it’s an alien,” Connor says.  Michael and Amy stare at him.  “I mean…this thing is crazy,” he says.  “That’s the third guy in my team that has gotten infected.  Is it hot in here?”  Connor asks.  Michael suddenly remembers the past when Jacob felt really hot.

“How hot do you feel?”  Michael asks.

“Pretty dang hot,” he says laughing a little.  He wipes some sweat away from his forehead as he drives.

“How long have we been driving?”  Amy asks.

“I would say about a good hour and a half.  Maybe a little…” he says and then stops.  He makes a face.

“What’s wrong?”  Michael asks.

“I don’t know.  I feel….” He says.  He suddenly screams and hits the gas.  His muscle in his leg tightens and the jeep speeds up.

“Slow down Connor!”  Amy says freaking out.  Connor screams more and releases tension from the gas.  Michael stares at him and sees blood coming out of his ear.

“Oh my God,” Michael says.

“You need to get out of the car,” he says trying to stop the jeep.  Michael looks and sees that their going about 45mph.  Connor holds his chest and screams again.  He begins to shake furiously.

“Connor, you need to calm down,” Michael says.  Connor doesn’t listen and continues to twist and turn violently and scream in pain.  “Connor, listen to me..” Michael says trying to tell him something.  Without hesitation, Connor’s chest burst open violently and blood hits everything in front of Connor.  The jeep freaks out and hits a guard rail.  The jeep begins to total as it spins and flips violently on the concrete road.  It finally stops after sliding a few feet upside down…

Michael wakes up after a minute or two and looks around.  He sees Amy and knows she is dead.  Her neck is broken and her spine is shown in her throat.  He looks away quickly.  He tries to move, but screams trying to do so.  He sees that his leg is broken in three places and cries a little wanting to get out.  Suddenly another army jeep drives up to the scene.  Soldiers come up to Michael and shine their lights on him.  They point their guns at him.  He wonders why they are and looks down and sees blood coming out of his mouth.

“Wait!  This is my blood!”  He says.

“Exactly,” one of the soldiers says.  Without hesitation, they open fire on Michael except one.

“He was so young,” he says.  One soldier comes up to him.

“Got to stop the infection,” he says.  “I’m sorry to say, but this is Armageddon,” he says getting back in the jeep.  A couple of soldiers catch the jeep on fire and begins to burn the dead bodies.

“Everyone dies son,” he finishes.  The soldier stands there looking at Michael’s dead corpse.  He shakes his head and gets in the jeep and drive off into the darkened sky.

I've noticed an amount of grammar errors, and the dialogue seemed...too basic. I guess that would be the way to describe it.

Still, this is one of the scariest things I could think of. Zombies, terrorists, aliens, those are things you can easily see and shoot at. But parasites...they both fascinate and frighten me.

Good work. I will be looking out for that part III.
