The next week, she tried to call Jeff. He didn't answer. Out of frustration and loneliness, she said some bitter words on his voice mail. He called her not too much later and told her to back off. Jeff proceeded to tell Evelyn that he wasn't going to leave his family for her. He told her that it would kill him to leave his family behind and that he needed to make it work with his wife because he loved her. He told Evelyn that it wasn't over between the two of them, but that they needed to shift where they were going. He told her that they were good friends and that he always wanted to be good friends with her. Evelyn tried to remain chipper and somewhat silent on the phone. She didn't want to lose Jeff. She couldn't, he was too much a part of her life. But afterward, Evelyn cried again. No matter what he said, things between them were going to be different. Her hopes of having happiness in the future were fading fast. Late that night, Evelyn went over the days events in her mind. Silently she cried for what was gone from her life. She wondered if Jeff had been lying to her the whole time about loving her. She cried for her child and the fact that he would never have his daddy hold him again. But most of all she cried for the woman that would be gone from her. The one that knew that she was important and had a purpose. The next day, Jeff called her again. She knew that he still wanted to remain friends, so it didn't surprise her much to hear from him. He asked her to come over to his office. She drove over there and looked at him as he met her out front. Why did he have to be so cute? Why did it have to be so hard? He took her inside and locked the door behind him. Silently, he held her close and gave her a huge bear hug. Evelyn felt herself snuggle up to him reveling in the warmth of his arms. It just felt so right. He took her over to the couch and proceeded to make love to her. Not just sex, but love. It was the first time that he had held her so close and tight as their bodies joined together. More than a physical act, it was as if they were touching each others souls. They looked deep into each other's eyes as they became one. After that, Evelyn was confused. She wasn't sure where she stood. She wasn't sure where to go or what to do. She felt like she was simply drifting on a sea of confusion letting it bounce her from wave to wave, not controlling her destiny. She hated not knowing where she was going; her future so clouded. She knew what was right, to love Derrick and be a family with him. But she wasn't sure that's what she wanted anymore. She just simply wasn't happy there. She knew deep down that she looked for ways to be angry at Derrick all the time simply to justify her relationship with Jeff. She want through the next couple of weeks trying to take one day at a time. It was hard, but she knew that's the only way she could remain sane. The force that had drawn her and Jeff together to begin with came back with a vengeance. It drew them back into the deep relationship that they were experiencing before. She knew that she loved him, she always would. But she also knew that she couldn't possibly start to think about the future that they could potentially have together. If she did that, she knew that it could lead to disappointment. Internally, Evelyn was in turmoil. Here she was with so many options and decisions. On the one hand, Derrick had been a decent husband. She knew that he did love her in his way, and he was a decent father. They had been together for a long time and the end of their marriage would be difficult if not catastrophic for a lot of different reasons. And deep inside, she knew that there was still part of her that loved him. Then there was Jeff. How could she know what life with him would be like? His track record with women wasn't very good, but then, he had never had anyone as loyal as her before either. But that decision was out of her hands until he decided otherwise. For now, Evelyn knew that there were no decisions to be made. Her raft would just continue to float on the big sea of life. She wasn't even sure what she wanted, and she sensed that Jeff wasn't sure in what he wanted either. Love, it comes into your life and is like a tornado of destruction when it wants to be. But it is also the ray of sunshine that keeps us warm. Evelyn knew that Jeff was both her tornado and her sunshine. She didn't want to lose out on either one.
Okay reader's here's where you come in. How would you have the story end? Should Evelyn stay with Derrick and work on their marriage. Or should Jeff and Evelyn get together. This is a story so they can live happily ever after....not like real life :) Copyright 2008 Michelle Huff |
