His muscles were weakening, his chest was on fire, and cool sweat was dripping off his forehead and stinging his eyes. “They won't get me. Run. Run 'til you can't nomore.” He coached himself "Please don't stop. Please don't stop!" In the distance, he could still hear their steady footsteps jogging behind him.

Realizing they weren’t wavering he began to sob a little, but quickly stopped when he saw it was slowing him down. He made a quick turn into the woods, but they were still on his trail. When he felt his sneakers slipping on the grass and he wondered if he sealed his fate. Finally, he couldn’t run anymore and he collapsed at the base of a tree. He heard the sound of their boots approaching. He used the tree as a tool to pull himself up.

At last they were in front of him. “You’ve had this coming to you a long time, Pike” the murderous figure sneered “a long time.”

“Yeah! Ha ha!” his cohorts jeered. Their voices sounded distorted to Pike; as though they were a record being played in slow motion.

Pike let his mind wonder to his events earlier that day. First thing he did was got a haircut and had the barber shape up his goatee. He had to keep up his appearance for the ladies, and he had plenty of them. Most of them weren’t his; many of them were the wives and girlfriends of other men.

“You thought you could run” the slow distorted voices mocked “didn’t you? Well guess-”

He also went to see a few of his female callers; Laura, Jennie, Toni, Brittney, Maria, they were all happy to see him though he didn’t know why. He treated them all like crap.

“Brittney, you dumb ****, don’t invite me over here for breakfast if you’re just going to burn the Goddamn eggs.” Or “Damnit Maria, I don’t ******’ understand that ******’ gibberish, ‘te amo, te amohable ingles, *****?” or what stings even worse is “If you want romance you need to go find your husband, ‘cus he aint me!”

The one he treated the best is the one that got it worse, his real girlfriend, Faye. He made a trip to see her that day as well. He always bought her nice gifts when he came by; they began crowding and filling up her apartment. That day, he came by with a ring.

“Thank you, Pike.” she said nonchalantly.

“This is a special type of ring.” He said putting it on her finger “I want you to marry me.”

At first her eyes read joy, then sadness, and then lifeless. “I know you love me” she began “and I know that you buy me nice things because that’s the only way you know how to show me that you love me, but I know about all the women, Pike.”

Pike laughed nervously “What are you talkin’ about, Babe; you know you’re the only girl for me.”

“That may be, Pike, but I can’t marry you when you can’t even be honest with me. I can’t marry you because I can barely take the hurt as it is.”

“Babe, listen, you’re talkin’ crazy. I-” She cut him off by putting the ring back in his hand. He didn’t know what to say or do, so he got up to leave, placing the ring in the key bowl by the door.

Before he walked he called to him “Be careful, Pikey. Just go straight home and think about us tonight. If you feel like you’re ready to give up your present lifestyle for me, I’ll marry you. But go straight home. It doesn’t feel safe out tonight.”

“That Faye” he thought “Even when she hates my guts she still cares. I am going to stop messin’ with other women. For Faye.” Although he didn’t go straight home, he went to a bar first.

“A man can always clear his mind in the shadows of a descent bar.” is what his dad used to say. That’s where they caught, on his way out. A dark figure called out his name, but Pike noticed the gleam of the gun right away and ran, and has been running since.

“Say goodbye, Pike.” The voice said.

“This is it” he thought. He held his chin up high and closed his eyes as tight as he could, wondering if it will hurt. Everything was still in slow motion when he heard a loud bang, he heard the sound of the bullet piercing the air “Sorry Faye.” were his last thoughts.
