He looked like he was pleased with himself. There was a grin etched on his face and he seemed to have an extra bounce in his step.
"So, what happens next?" he asked.
"Well, I'll send it to the guys downstairs to review and get some feedback. If they like it I'll ask the shorts editor if he wants it, and if he does, you're on." I replied. "You must bear in mind that whilst I think you've got a good style and your stories are enjoyable, I still have to leave the decision to my guys. It's not just about style and imagination - originality, composition, readability and all other whatnots... Yeah, they reject a lot more than they accept as can be expected."
"Oh, I'm fine with that Uncle B. I can always adapt it to suit if they want."
I like Jack. He is very enthusiastic. And he knows quality is what cuts it in this trade.
Jack's always had a vivid imagination right from when he was a kid. He drove his mother mad with his tall tales and invisible friends! "Let him be Martha!" I used to her, "the lad's got a fine imagination. Don't deter him..." Still learning the ropes in the publishing business in those early days, I was keenly aware of the gulf of imagination and skill that separates the dull from the truly brilliant writers.
Without intending to, nor realising it, I encouraged young Jack to follow his imaginations. I indulged his stories. Whenever I couldn't go over to visit, I asked him to write and post me a story in a letter. On his eleventh birthday, I got him a cheap Olivetti. By then though, Jack was longer talking about imaginary friends, no, he understood writing and he knew fiction. It was no longer just some childish imagination, no, he was teaching himself the art of story crafting.
"Our operation is simple Jack, our more popular stories and writers earn us better rates with the sponsors and we have a simple revenue split plan. So, if your story does well you do well!"
If your story does well, you do well. Well, that just about sums up the business. Despite all our civilization and sophistication, nothing beats a good story. And so I thought to myself, you've done quite well for yourself Barry old chap, why not tell your story? Copyright 2007 Penson Pallister |
