A man emerged suddenly through the darkness, traversing at a quick precise gait. He wore a light colored suit that seemed out of place downtown. He kept walking. He was unaware of his surroundings, a back ally of a run-down city; it appeared as darkness to him. Several people spotted him and shot him malevolent looks. He pressed onward as all the onlookers shot him increasingly malicious looks. Suddenly, the man discerned a bright light through the darkness. He had been told the story: Long tunnel, stay away from the light. Unfortunately, for those who had accepted that word as law, it was false, for those who wanted to remain high in the eyes of the Lord. The man turned west down an even more obscure side-street street, changing his course to northward one. As he pursued his path, two stray cats emerged in front of him. They both sought to lead him in opposite directions; the man was lost at this. He overturned an empty garbage can to sit on. As he sat, he pondered which route to take. The more he thought the more he wanted to stay. As he sat there, he searched through his life for inspiration. As he sat he looked back on his life: he was married, had children went to work, helped others, even those who were viewed upon as having earned nothing. When the strays reappeared, the pair’s once neutral physiognomy changed to a look of shock, spite, and scorn. Their expressions grew sterner as the man’s clothes seemed to mature into a shade of grey. At this, the cats strutted away, as if to imitate a saint. He awoke the next morning with a smile on his face. Not that of someone who has won an award, or been told a joke. It was the kind that said, “I’m happy to be here today.” What a strange man.
