Joanna eyed the party lights as they flickered on the wall from across the room. She smiled lazily while trying to focus on the many different faces milling past the couch where she sat. Her head was buzzing and she was rather enjoying the way the alcohol was making the world seem distant. Joanna and her friend Beth had come to the party a few hours earlier as two unsure, hesitant high school freshmen. Upon arrival the two girls were relieved to be welcomed by the crowd. Neither Beth nor she had been to a party before that involved alcohol. Sure, they had gotten tipsy in the past, but that had always been with just a few friends. This party was totally different. The atmosphere was alive with music that was blasted so loud she could only hear it through the pounding, deep in her chest. All around her was a din of loud, talkative voices that combined into a confused roar. The air smelled of an intoxicating mix of beer, cologne, and cigarette smoke, while the dimly illuminated rooms were packed with so many people she could no longer remember who she had talked to. The two girls had snuck out of her house once her parents had fallen asleep, and had walked the mile and a half to the party. This was Brad Campbell’s house, whose parents had gone away for the weekend. Brad was a senior in high school. He was decent looking, and fairly popular. Mainly he was known for the wild parties he threw. Joanna didn’t know where he got all the beer from, but it was in large supply and piled in ice filled coolers. She didn’t know how much she had drunk. Every time Joanna finished a beer, another seemed to make its way into her hands. People she chatted with were always encouraging her to ‘drink up’ as if she needed to reach an unspoken quota or something. Most of the people were older, either juniors or seniors, but there were a couple of other freshmen around. She was exhilarated to find that some of the older boys had actually been flirting with her. A few minutes earlier, after finishing a brief conversation, she had taken the opportunity to sit down on a nearby couch and rest. She had never been really ‘drunk’ before and was enjoying just sitting and feeling the warm fuzzy sensation. It wasn’t long before she felt the couch bump as a boy sat down next to her. “Hey,” he yelled. “I haven’t seen you before.” “No,” she shouted back in his ear as she flashed a cute drunken smile at him, “This is my fwurst time to one of Brad’s partiees.” She giggled after hearing the way the alcohol made her sound. “Enjoying yourself?” he asked with a wry smile. He was really cute. She couldn’t remember his name exactly, but knew that she had seen him around school. She thought that he was a junior, but wasn’t certain. “Yeah!” she said excitedly, while placing one hand lazily on her forehead, “This is great!” She smiled some more and leaned over towards him. The boy sat in silence as if in contemplation for a moment, and then rose quickly to his feet. “Come on,” he said taking her hand and pulling her off the couch. As Joanna got to her feet her vision blurred and her ears grew hot, muffling the sounds around her. Not wanting to be awkward she followed him through the crowd while she tried to clear her head. They passed some people who were standing around the kitchen and went down to the end of the hall. The boy opened a door and stepped inside pulling her along with him. They went inside and he closed the door. The room was dark and she stood there for a moment both trying to get her bearings and her balance. It occurred to her that it was a little odd that he had taken her into a bedroom considering there were no people back here. However, it was kind of nice being away from the noise. Still trying to clear her head she reached for the bed and sat down. It felt nice and cool. She was thinking how nice it would be to just lay down and close her eyes for awhile, until this dizziness passed, when she felt the boy’s lips on her own. It was a strong, passionate kiss, and was so sudden that she didn’t know what to make of it. To have an older boy be so smitten with her as to be kissing her was great, but there was something in the urgency of it she found surprising. She turned her head breaking off the kiss, feeling uncertain, but he kissed her again. This time he held her tight, pressing her body close to his. She felt her head spinning from the alcohol, and was having a hard time figuring out if she was really here or in some sort of dream. Joanna felt both of them tipping back onto the bed and the next thing she knew he was on top of her. She felt as light as a feather in the embrace of the boy. But then his hands began to grope her body. This was a little uncomfortable. Kissing was great, but she didn’t want to give him the wrong idea or anything, but then she didn’t want to appear childish either. She broke off the kiss again and he rolled off of her. She figured they were just going to go back to kissing like before, when she felt him undoing her pants and starting to pull them off. Now she was quite uncomfortable, but felt too dazed to figure out how to tell him she would rather go back out to the party. She figured he would think she was acting like a little kid, but this just didn’t feel right. Her legs felt cold and she realized her pants had been totally removed. A moment later the boy’s weight was back on top of her. This was going very bad and she wanted him to stop. She tried to tell him to stop and move out from under him, but she couldn’t seem to get her body to work properly, and he was so heavy. His kiss had initially felt sweet, but now it was foul. Then she felt pain. A burning like fire between her legs that tore at her again and again. The pain threw her into a paralysis. She couldn’t move or think about anything other than the pain and pray for it to stop. The boy breathed heavily and with every pant blew sour breath in her face. She felt her eyes well up with water, and tears began to stream down her cheeks. The panting grew harder and the pain greater, and then with a jolt it stopped as the boy collapsed on top of her. The burning was replaced by a dull throb and a cold wetness. Joanna didn’t move. She was vaguely aware of the boy getting up and buttoning his pants before leaving her laying alone in the room. She was crying with tears of confusion and pain. What had just happened? She was scared and felt as if she had lost all control. Carefully she felt around in the dark for her pants. Gingerly she pulled them on and stumbled towards the door. Opening it she was overcome with the pounding of the music and the smell of beer. She felt suddenly sick and threw up all over the floor. She was crying uncontrollably now, and without a thought of cleaning up her mess she pushed her way down the hallway and through the throng of people. She had to get out. She had to get home. Finding the front door she stepped out into the cool night air. With her head still in a haze of confusion, she walked and then broke into a stumbling jog, not caring or thinking about Beth, only about getting home. The time itself seemed to drift into oblivion, as the next thing she noticed was her own front yard. Fumbling with her keys she opened the door and stepped inside. Shutting it behind her she slid down to the floor and lapsed into quiet crying. “Joanna?” came a soft whisper from upstairs. “Is that you?” Joanna didn’t move. The stairs creaked quietly as Joanna’s mother slowly descended the stairs. “Joanna?” she asked again with concern. Unable to hold back, Joanna broke into uncontrollable sobs. Not asking or saying anything, her mother sat down beside her and hugged her tenderly. She didn’t let go, and they both sat there in silence until all the tears were gone.
