Tis true).     How unfortunate that he could not control his drinking...    I like this because it's parallel to what can happen in modern relationships... A man (or woman) may not be able to control his/her "drinking", that is, he/she may overwork, may indulge in too much entertainment (TV, videogames, sports, etc), may do anything to get heaps of cash (whatever), and their spouse will end up hurting (he/she may feel put aside or rejected and that'll lead to depression or an ugly beat down). The relationship will usually weaken, and eventually die...    I liked this. I can extract an infinite amount of things from your poetry. I looked at this as a metaphor, but that's just me.
