Hands down, one of the best opening lines to a story I've ever heard. Seriously. The character is established perfectly, and there is also immediate tension (ie, I wonder what's the apology going to be for?). When I read that, I was actually grinning.
And after you give the best, "show, don't tell" line, the rest of it dwindles into telling and loses my attention. So close, so close.
