If you can't say anything encouraging or positive then don't say anything at all. Sure, Zombies have been done to death, but they are ingrained into our artistic society and are classic, and will be around forever. It's telling a good story that makes or breaks the usual. And this is a good story. The focus is on the main character's emotional reaction to his dilemma, rather that the zombies themselves. John, you have told a very good story, well-written. The contrast of the first paragraph to the rest of the story is ingenous. I liked the use of the church as santuary and the fighting spirit of the people fortifying it. The main character's emotional state is well portrayed. My only objection is the use of the words "I guess." A lot of your commas could be replaced by periods. It's ok to shorten some of your sentences. All in all, did not detract form the jist of the story. Nothing a good edit couldn't fix.
Bravo for a job well done! Keep on writing!
Sincerely,
