I am reminded by jones of skepticism of young modern people of organized religion... he sees in the old man parralels with Churchs who used an iron fist to enforce Gods law, as in the past with the crusades, which hunts ect. Jones sees entirely human motivations behind the punishment of sinners. Malachi sees the true intention of religions, the life of peace an love, and values this to the degree that he will fight to defend it. Lots of allegory for real life in this story.
