Quoting from it: Although not traditionally regarded as an apotropaic, mirrors have been used to ward off vampires when placed facing outwards on a door (vampires do not have a reflection and in some cultures, do not cast shadows, perhaps as a manifestation of the vampire's lack of a soul).

Knowing a nit more about vampires now and re-reading the story, the plot could be viewed as she was not aware she was a vampire or not yet completly a vampire and through her interaction with the mirror these were fulfilled. Just thinking out loud there, I don't want my mind wandering to steer away from the authors intended plot.
Forgetting about the vampire connection and whether they do, don't see their reflections; I really enjoyed the descriptive writing of the actions. Next to no emotion was described as she went through the acts, thus uncertain how she was reacting to her encounter other than obviously she was curious, unafraid.
