He got home to find his mother a broken alcoholic but as soon as she saw him she vowed to never drink again and ran to embrace him. He grew up and wrote a book about his childhood (which became a best seller) and everything was all right!  Oh, and he saw Billy again and in the end stopped him from commiting suicide.  Yes, I know.
