most of the books that i have an addiction to tend to come from a "land" or time.

the dragonlance chronicles... weiss and hickman

any and all of the dozens of "pern books" ... ann mccaffrey

the entire "was gonna be a trilogy" - thomas covenant books ... stephen donaldson - that turned into six excellent books.

the xanth and adept series, written by what i consider to be one of the most prolific writers ever cast upon the earth. i like this guy so much i'm even gonna toss in a link for him this is the link

when i get tired of the "close to real world" stuff, i step into one of his punny lands of pure silliness. i used to wonder how on earth this guy could chuck out so many stories simultaneously... then i found that he writes many books at the same time. this guy is the king of the multiple story marathon - my writing hero...

i learned from this guy to leave no thought unthunk.

Ooops...correction to myself...it was called "From the Corner of his Eye" ...but anyways, I mostly influenced by Chuck Palahniuk , you may know him as the author of Fight Club...his other books are even better....just my own opinion

I'm a fiction/humour although Tolkien tickles me too.
My favourite book:

Terry Prattchet - Mort

The best quote is about the meat pies sold by C.M.O.T. Dibbler, by Mort's Dad is, "There's hardly any gristle in them."

If you like funny and addictive, Terry Prattchet it is.

Another is The Silmarillion.

I got The Time Machine by HG Wells for Christmas. Its very very good considering it was written before cars were invented. Even without considering that, it's still excellent.

I liked Tolkien too but the last LOTR book dragged on forever... made me want to jump out my bedroom window.

I have The Time Machine and The Invisible Man, but I have yet to read them.

I am currently reading George Orwell's 1984.
