A Question Concerning Non-Fiction 4 Weeks ago
|
|

For this site, if a story is based off a true event, 95% is true, but some things are added to give the story that extra little spice; do you think it should be put under Non-Fiction or one of the Ficiton categories?

when i was at journalism camp at new york, my teacher was talking about this. apparently there is a new category for this and its called literary nonfiction or something like that. its for books that are based on true events but arent true. but then theres the fact that almost every story is based on true events so that would make almost every book in the libary under that category. so then there wouldn't be a need for fiction.
if you know parts of it aren't true then its ficiton. if it's your opinion on things or your view on the story but its different than someone else's view on the event then its still nonfiction.

Well, the only thing I'm really adding is dialogue. And maybe a couple scenes that could have been true.
So I guess I'll do a fiction category then.
Thanks!

David Sedaris is a comedy writer with a huge following. His books kill the non-fiction charts, but he says that really he is writing comedy or 'exaggerated' truths, taking the funny and going even further with it.
There's some who are upset with that. But, I think if you are putting your own take on non-fiction, and filling in some of the blanks with dialog, then it's still non-fiction.

I was reading about that a while ago. I love David Sedaris. When you read so many of his stories you kind of get the idea that he's changing the light of some things to make the whole of the story funnier. I always considered him more of a comedy writer than a nonfiction. I need to get his new book.......for free.

I thought it strange that he was non-fiction too. Like Bill Cosby, he's telling a story but putting it in the funnies light.
