For just plain enjoyment it is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

For its unbelievable structure and content, I like Gödel, Escher, Bach (GE by Doug Hofstadter. It's one of those books they never know where to put in a bookstore. It won a Pulitzer.

maxx, i couldn't imagine you picking any other artist...

i've run the full gambit of books, all of stephen donaldsons books, ann mccaffrey (i think that's spelled correctly), the dragon lance chronicles...

give me a dragon, wizard, warriors and a good conflict and i'll get addicted...

i'm a huge piers anthony fan - i find his humor (and punniness) genius, even though his stories might seem elementary and very simple.

issac asimov, andre norton - endless list, it is.

however! my favorite book is watership down.

that being said, i'll shut up now.

This one of those questions that I always try to avoid but I'd have to say it would be Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Candide! That book has everything! And The Sea Gull by Chekhov (it's a play... but it's in a book so it still counts?).

I like a fair amount of novels. The Count of Monte Cristo, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Carrie, Night Shift.

All of them were good novels. If I would have to choose my absolute favorite, I'd go with 2001.

Sir Stephen of Lombardi,

are you referencing Candide by Voltaire?
