If you were around at Storiesville.com yesterday, you may have noticed that there was some hitted discussions within our forum regarding adult content. Now that I had some time to think about where we should go from here, I want to take a minute and clear the air once and for all.
So after I posted a response to
this thread in the forum, I suddenly received multiple reports regarding the poems written by one member as I was desperately searching for inappropriate content using every dirty words I know. Up until then, I didn't know the whole thing was caused by one member's works. Was it really all about one member's poems? If that wasn't the case, someone please let me know. Obviously these poems rubbed several members the wrong way, and I decided to unpublish them from the website.
But let me tell you. As I was hitting the unpublish botton for these poems, I couldn't help to feel bad for this member. It wasn't because I had to unpublish his works, but because of the way it was handled. He wasn't one of those pass-by people who are only interested in submitting their works for feedbacks and never contribute to other people's stories. He does contribute to other people's works by sharing his opinions as well as posting his own stories. Sometimes his views are quite different from others, but I say the difference in opinions are what makes this community flourish. I just hoped that someone would have let me know privately what the situation was either by using reporting system or email.
As our lovely
Ms. Lori Branson has summarized for us, it seems as there were three separate but related issues regarding having graphic materials on Storiesville:
1) What is considered distasteful
2) What is considered too adult for this site
3) What do we do to not be blocked from schools
My decision is: "WE DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING."
What is considered distasteful or too sexual will be decided by our members as it always has been. When I come across a story that I feel inappropriate I remove it immediately. But if I am on the fence, I usually look at the comments for the story and see if there have been any reports regarding this story. However, I haven't decided on whether to work with moderator or not. It seems as we have split opinions about that.
As far as for being blocked from the schools access, please don't worry about it too much. It's not the first time that Storiesville has been flagged as a website not appropriate for educational purposes. With all the stories with F words popping up like crazy, I am not surprised that some schools would decide to block our website. I mean we have stories where people get their heads blown up or a perverted teacher fantasizing about murdering a school girl. Some organizations love our website and some don't. That's always been the case since the day one. I refuse to start censoring people's stories just because I want to gain more hits from schools or libraries. We already have plenty of other schools that choose to recommend our website for creative writing resources.
Storiesville.com has grown its size significantly, and I thank our members for that. I am lucky to run a website where the members truly care about shaping its community to a better condition. But with all the writers, who like to voice their points of view, sharing one community, there are bound to be conflicts. I promise to do my best to make your visits as enjoyable as possible.
P.S.
Mr Mugwump, I am sorry to see that you've removed all of your stories. As you have many fans here, feel free to let us know where you're submitting your stories now, so that we can keep reading your work.
