page scanning maybe?
let me tell you what i think is a good story. a story that makes me read it. sound weird?
i have been a professional page scanner for probably twenty years.
i have read more gun fights, sword fights, and space wars - than i can remember.
here's how it works -
read with interest/get to swordfight/scan to end of swordfight to see who lives/read with interest.
i have been using an internal google system for quite some time. i operate on keywords. many times, depending on the author, i will scan paragraphs for key words, while my brain is trying to figure out what i will be having for lunch.
many of the horror stories, especially shorts are the same for me. so i will habitually jump paragraphs, read five or six words, move on, rinse/repeat - get to the end.
some of you guys really screw me up. i will go through one or two paragraphs and in the middle of the third - i realize there is information i need in the previous paragraph. so i end up reading the whole story.
that's the kind of story i like, one that i have to read in order to catch content.
some evil folks (i'm innocent of this) have a tendency to put a curve into the end and force me to read the whole story just because i know who wrote it. i won't mention any names, but their initials are, um.. potter, chris, quinn, yanu, collet to mention a few.
so the message is, i think, don't follow the trend. don't write about the same thing - write about something.
make us have to read your story!
smile!
