Re:Commentary: Idiots. 10 Months ago
Thanks for your comments. To be honest, I didn't really know the situation was that bad. When we decided to change our setting to auto-publish all stories we were somewhat concerned that it may lead to bringing down the quality of our website, and apparently it seems as it has. But as dumb as that might sound, I am not really sure what I could do at this moment.

Before the auto-publish feature was applied, I used to receive several emails everyday complaining about how long it takes us to review and publish their stories. Even after the stories have been reviewed and published, many members were still not very happy about how their stories tend to get buried under the pile of other published stories. That's what made me decide to try out automatically publishing all stories as they are submitted. After all, the foundation of Storiesville was based on the concept, "Everyone has a story to share." And I gotta admit the number of submitted stories was becoming a little overwhelming for me as well.

However, the last thing that I ever wanted was to make this website trashy. I implemented "Report this story" button to every stories hoping that this will alert me if someone were to take advantage of the auto publish feature, but so far I've received less than twenty reports related to story contents so far. But obviously this has not been such an effective method of filtering low-quality stories.

So how do we fix this problem? I am open for suggestions. As far as I am concerned, I see we can choose one of the following:
1) Disable the auto-publish and go back to 'review n publish'
2) Keep the auto-publish and rely on our members to use the reporting system.
3) Elect number of our members to become our moderators along with myself and grant them the power to remove/modify submitted stories.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

This may a bit off the topic, but I would like to talk about advertisements on our website since it was mentioned in the first post. When we first built this website we made it to share short stories amongst five friends. Now our website has grown beyond my expectation, and I am sad to say that I have to see this success by myself as all of my other friends has left to do other things. Running Storiesville.com has never been about making money, and hopefully it never will. Even with all the advertisements running on this website, it doesn't even cover one tenth of the expenses that I have to spend. So I guess all I want to say about advertisement is please try to understand my situation.

Anyways, I always appreciate taking a moment of your days to visit Storiesville and share your stories. I will do my best to come up with the solution to enhance our environment as soon as possible. Thank you again for the heads up.

one more idea.... HOW do we differentiate between a kosher sex scene in an adult tagged story and complete "filth"? As lori said, there is a difference.

Ok some clear rules:

1- story or poem should have themes and plot points besides sexual activity.
1.5- the primary intent of a story with explicit sexual material should not be pornographic.
2- story should not explicitly describe genitalia or genital-interaction primarily for sexual entertainment.
3- an explicit scene that is portrayed for "sexual entertainment" must never include minors or rape.
4- explicit sexual content must never be submitted by a minor user.

Ok... member moderators tend to abuse. That is bad.

1- the report mechanism should be LOUDER. more clearly viewable. Big RED button.

2- Easily readable, well formatted, big-text guidelines page shown to every NEW user.

3- 3 day ban for purposeful repeat offenders.

4- CLEAR alert message to inform submitter of an offensive story.

Im thinking we leave it all as it is and hope the filth just stops now that members have expressed thier concerns. A think disabling auto publish is the last thing the admin wants to do. Lets just sit back and see what comes of this.
