About Myself: I was born and raised in Kolkata, India. I then crossed continents and culture to earn a Ph.D in Economics at the University of Rochester (NY). Except for a few years of teaching in Canada and Japan, I was a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute both in Delhi and Kolkata until my retirement in August 2006. I am now embarking on my second career, that of a fiction writer of short stories.

I have published academic articles in professional journals across the
world and Oxford University Press (New Delhi) has published two of my books. However, my avocation for a number of years has been writing short stories that I did not have the time to polish and to try to publish.

Now, hopefully, is the time.

Looking forward to your return
I was myself away from the site for a while for unavoidable reasons. When I returned, I began to miss you. And it was only today that I finally landed this post. I had been reading your earlier posts since my come back. This is why it took me so much time to notice this one.

Wish Patricia and you all the best.

Wondering ...
Did Jamal deserve the treatment he received? It seems to me that to a large extent his cronies were responsible for the things that happened. Except for that one occasion when he spoke of getting rid of her bf, he appeared to me to be just a boy running after a girl. I am wondering if it was the company he kept that infuriated the girl? Or, was it his insensitivity to the fact that she was going steady with someone else that made her behave the way she did? I read the story twice and concluded that Jamal was not too arrogant after all. So, I am not sure of the psychology at work.

The typos didn't bother me. The first two stanzas appeared to be suggesting silent surrender. The tone of the poem changes slowly and the last line says a great deal. It gave me the impression that I was witnessing a silent, powerful revolt. I was impressed by the line: 'Would it speak about the freedoms, some died for while others mock?'

Good Narration
I made a sincere attempt to read this story. Clearly it was science fiction. It reminded me of the last part of Star Wars. But it also had a flavour of Pygmallion in it. I am not terribly sure how the story ended, though I enjoyed the narrative style.

I was wondering if it might be easier on the reader if you were to break up the story into smaller parts and published them as serialized chapters. It could help readers like me, those who are not too familiar with the complexities of science fiction, to enjoy the story more.

Incidentally, your use of the word 'titanic' brought up a question. Did you have the Titans of Greek mythology in your mind too? We know that the Titans were destroyed too.

I am sorry that I haven't been able to give you as good a feedback as you deserve.

Lost and found
I lost myself totally as I read this and found myself back after reading the explanation at the end. Quite a job. One hears of nonsense rhymes. But nonsense prose is a new idea, at least to me. Great fun reading, I mean reading the second time.

Poetry
I agree with Ashutosh. This reads like a poem. Tale of a horror softly told. Nothing crude, yet devastatingly brutal. It contains everything man ever imagined -- from God to incest. It is so quintessentially human -- its morbidity as well as its poetry. It's hard, yet it is so soft.

Great Story
A great horror story. Took me back to Hitchcock's collections. The end was unexpected of course. I kept wondering for a while why he couldn't have committed the murder before his experience in the lab. Probably because there would be no trace left of the victim if the murder weapon turned out to be the vaccine itself. The final twist in the story is remarkably good. Failure turns into success!! The famed silver lining I guess.

Magic
This was sheer magic. Quite apart from the style of narration, you succeed in bringing up a deep question. Does love last this long? My answer is: Yes, it does. It does, especially so when it raised a hope in the distant past. People don't grow old, even if affected by Alzheimer's. They live and relive that lost moment, a moment that could have changed the course of their lives. No, old age is a myth. She withers away, but the twinkle in her eyes never fades. The power of romance has little to do with age. Or even death. This is one of the best stories, one of the most real stories I have read on Storiesville. You deserve great success.

Well written
This is a well written piece. The title 'Puppets' is quite symbolic too, clearly a reference to fate. The ghosts may or may not be fate's arms. But they appear to enjoy fate's workings, vodoo mischief. I don't know if this a complete story. But it is enchanting, a deeply absorbing commentary on man's estate. Enjoyed every bit of it.

Great style
This is wonderfully told. I admire your style. Of course, I like the idiosyncrasies of the cat. Most enjoyably portrayed. But you may be surprised by what I have to say next. Stylistically speaking, what I liked best was the way you introduced Lisa. One was asking who she was. You heard the silent query. And satisfied the reader's curiosity so neatly!!

Thank you! Yeah, I'd like to be publishe, too, but I have years before I'm good enough for something like that. And thanks for reading Jericho, i should be finished with the next chapter later today. I haven't read too much of your work but I'll start doing that later on today also.

Once again, thanks!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the nice, intelligent review on my story, "The Book Cellar".

Peace,

Max
