About Myself: I was born and raised in Kolkata, India. I then crossed continents and culture to earn a Ph.D in Economics at the University of Rochester (NY). Except for a few years of teaching in Canada and Japan, I was a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute both in Delhi and Kolkata until my retirement in August 2006. I am now embarking on my second career, that of a fiction writer of short stories.

I have published academic articles in professional journals across the
world and Oxford University Press (New Delhi) has published two of my books. However, my avocation for a number of years has been writing short stories that I did not have the time to polish and to try to publish.

Now, hopefully, is the time.

That was me!
I don't know why this comment came out as an anonymous one. It was me, i.e. d.dasgupta.

Grim reality
This was grim reality. Reality of the modern world. Loneliness of children whose parents are busy with their ambitions. It was truly a pathetic scene that you portrayed. As Phil has commented, this is only the beginning of the story.

Most Illuminating
Know thyself. That is the hardest of exercises one can undertake. Find out what YOU want. That is even harder perhaps. Few realize this, right? It is far too easy to imitate, because that amounts to avoiding the responsibility that one has, as a thinking individual, towards himself. But imitation can never be the path of wisdom or peace. On the other hand, someone who has found himself, does not really live in obscurity as far as he himself is concerned.

Moving
This was one truly moving tale. I am never able to understand people who don't love dogs. How can you not love someone who loves you so much and expects so little in return?

Will Max find a new dog? Even if he does, things will never be the same. He could have found himself a new wife too! But he didn't.

Hoping
Well, there was some humour in the last part. It raises hopes that the end of the story will be less gory than what one may be apprehending it to be. No more dead bodies please, if you can manage.

Impressively original
I went back and checked again for the category. It was indeed mystery as I confirmed. I found the mixture of mystery and humour quite original. Mystery from the cat's point of view, humour and a lot of love from the human point of view. Quite well thought out. I wonder how these animals think, I mean what their emotions are like. I think I understand a dog better than a cat. After reading this I want to post something on an animal. Neither cat not dog. Not a creature that anyone seems to love too much. Let's see! :)

Made my day
I am happy that I started off the day with this superb piece. I know I am a latecomer and you know why. But I read you twice, some parts I read three or four times. I hate to use the expression 'this is cool', partly so because you wouldn't expect me to be cool-ing you. But this is the only time in my life that the word came to my mind naturally. Do pour out more.

Too many coincidences
I can see that you are bringing the two strands of the story together. So, the denoument is not probably too far away. But somehow, I feel that you brought in too many coincidences in this chapter. Perhaps they were necessary, perhaps not. My only request is that you don't hurry towards an end. You are too good a writer to need to hurry. Also, the violence too could probably be brought under control. The way the story has gone until now, possibly that alternative doesn't exist. Nonetheless, I thought I should mention this.

Thank you! Yeah, I'd like to be publishe, too, but I have years before I'm good enough for something like that. And thanks for reading Jericho, i should be finished with the next chapter later today. I haven't read too much of your work but I'll start doing that later on today also.

Once again, thanks!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the nice, intelligent review on my story, "The Book Cellar".

Peace,

Max
