About Myself: I was born and raised in Kolkata, India. I then crossed continents and culture to earn a Ph.D in Economics at the University of Rochester (NY). Except for a few years of teaching in Canada and Japan, I was a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute both in Delhi and Kolkata until my retirement in August 2006. I am now embarking on my second career, that of a fiction writer of short stories.

I have published academic articles in professional journals across the
world and Oxford University Press (New Delhi) has published two of my books. However, my avocation for a number of years has been writing short stories that I did not have the time to polish and to try to publish.

Now, hopefully, is the time.

Fun read
It was fun reading this. Liked the names Irmah Dread and Whorecourt. The characters in the story look truly real. The story ends the way it should. One can't help grinning and going back to the beginning where the husband patronizes the wife (youngest). Polygamy is legal there, right?

Title article: Wish ( Her lullyaby)

Excellent
This is truly an excellent piece of creation. The sincerity shows through so clearly. It touches your heart straightaway!

Very impressed.

OK
This poem is less intense than the last one you posted. It is good, but I wish it were a little more intense.

Title article: Not one tear

Striking composition
The line I liked best was

'The thought of you is haunting like an itch that can not be scratched'

I didn't expect it to end the way it did. It was a shock that brought out the intensity of the feeling strongly.

Very good work.

Title article: A Dish Served Cold

hmmm
Story of retribution. Reminded me of a movie in which a man single handedly avenged the death of his daughter(?). I can't recall the name of the actor, but he was quite popular as a tough guy character. I think he was part of the Magnificent Seven movie. Anyway, I was expecting some sort of police intervention. But I can see the point of not bringing them in. Very well written. Can't find any obvious gap anywhere. :)

Short Stay
A tale full of human warmth. Well written, particularly so because it raises fundamental questions. It is a sad story, yet it carries hope. One fills fulfilled to read such stories.

Title article: A Haiku Mystery

Most innovative
I have never come across this structure. Four haikus strung together to tell a story. Each haiku though is a haiku in its own right, both in terms of structure as well as in terms of its depth. Exceedingly well done.

Congratulations
Sorry to arrive so late. But I am truly happy to hear the news. Nothing makes me more happy than the sight of a smiling face.

More importantly, your assurance that there is no unnecessary graphic violence fills me up with hope. I strongly feel that if you have a good story to tell, it can be told without graphic violence.

Congratulations and I wish you bring us more news like this in future.

Title article: Wisdom Is For The Birds
Date: 2008-09-05 23:06:54

Exceedingly well written. I liked the parable style in particular. I can even see the moral of the story, though I try to avoid morals in my stories.

The best part of the story I think is the way you have constructed a logical puzzle. True, the story is a complete constitutes a complete circle. Your finesse lies in posing a question. The question is: Whose story is it that we are hearing? A parakeet's or an eagle's? If it is the parakeet's tale, then quite obviously it is the tale of a parakeet who was once and eagle. If it is the eagle's tale, then it is the story of an eagle who metamorphosed into a parakeet. It can't be an eagle's tale unless it is actually a parakeet's tale. It can't be a parakeet's tale unless it is actually an eagle's tale.

I love this logical dilemma, because it reminds me a little of Russel's paradox. Of course, I must hasten to add that this story is NOT an example of Russel's paradox. But the way it is told makes it appear like that paradox.

Thank you! Yeah, I'd like to be publishe, too, but I have years before I'm good enough for something like that. And thanks for reading Jericho, i should be finished with the next chapter later today. I haven't read too much of your work but I'll start doing that later on today also.

Once again, thanks!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the nice, intelligent review on my story, "The Book Cellar".

Peace,

Max
