About Myself: I was born and raised in Kolkata, India. I then crossed continents and culture to earn a Ph.D in Economics at the University of Rochester (NY). Except for a few years of teaching in Canada and Japan, I was a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute both in Delhi and Kolkata until my retirement in August 2006. I am now embarking on my second career, that of a fiction writer of short stories.

I have published academic articles in professional journals across the
world and Oxford University Press (New Delhi) has published two of my books. However, my avocation for a number of years has been writing short stories that I did not have the time to polish and to try to publish.

Now, hopefully, is the time.

Title article: Her Magic Touch, Chapter 8

Excellent Work
I read all the previous chapters and liked them. There is enjoyable madness in this tale, but more importantly, you speak of HOPE. It's a sentiment that appeals to me -- to all humanity I guess. It's a bit of a Cinderella tale, I agree. But it's cute in its All's Well That Ends Well approach. I know they lived happily ever after!! :)

Very good, but ...
I still like your narration. It's still a story that flows smoothly. But, I am slightly disappointed that it doesn't sound crazy any longer. What attracted me most to this story was its magical madness. The tale has suddenly turned suave. I will keep reading of course and keep hoping that you take us back on the mad voyage once again. Of course, it's just my way of looking at things. I did re-read Chapter 4.

This was the first of your stories and the last one I read. Like the others who've commented, I am somewhat confused. But on re-reading, I think I follow the story line though. It is tragic to say the least. Especially so, when Lucy happens to be the mother!

Surprise
I was surprised to read this. Quite different from your usual style and (probably) interest.

It's simple, to the point and reaches the heart.

Truth is simple, as Aristotle had said. I keep quoting this to everyone I know.

Quality
This is quality writing in my opinion. You are so careful with the language, every word used thoughtfully, lovingly.

A dream story. It could have been, it should have been. But the train of life arrives and shatters the dreams. Life moves on. Her life, his life ...

A perfect story from a perfectionist. Great to know authors like you exist and this is no dream I am sure.

Quite a surprise
I liked this story a lot. However, I did not enjoy the end all that much. Somehow, this story would sound more convincing if it went the other way round. There are a lot of weird men in society who do such things to women. What adds novelty to your story is that it was the woman who did it to the man. Perhaps the novelty is called for, a warning perhaps to men that things could happen the other way too.

But this is a truly well-written story.

Title article: Stop Pretending!

So true ...
You are so right. Yet things don't happen the way they should. I have often wondered about comparable problems in India. Asking for dowry is illegal. Yet in large parts of the country dowry is taken for granted. And dowry deaths are all too common. I have always asked why the girls can't refuse to marry a man who demands dowry. But that will never happen. Instead, female foeticide is rampant. They don't let the girls be born. A grown up girl's dowry is a horror parents need to cope with. So kill her before she is born. The sex ratio in this country is turning into an alarming figure.

Deeply moving
There is nothing new in this story, yet it is told so wonderfully that one cannot give up reading it till the end. The horror of it all, losing her, finding her and then losing her again. Endlessly tragic. What makes this story particularly moving is that it sounds so real. It could happen. It could happen to any of us.

It is a fantasy
I don't think there is anything farfetched in this story. It is a fantasy, a fairy tale if you like. At least, I am reading the story that way. To enjoy a story like this, I know that I need to exercise a wilful suspension of disbelief. It's a bit like watching a play. The events take place in a room that doesn't have a fourth wall. We accept that fact, don't we? I still think this is a remarkable piece of fiction.

Keep it up.

Still going great
This is a bit of a fantasy I know. But it is one that holds your attention. I am reading something so good after a long time.

Thank you! Yeah, I'd like to be publishe, too, but I have years before I'm good enough for something like that. And thanks for reading Jericho, i should be finished with the next chapter later today. I haven't read too much of your work but I'll start doing that later on today also.

Once again, thanks!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the nice, intelligent review on my story, "The Book Cellar".

Peace,

Max
