About Myself: This I Believe…
¨ I believe all people have an equal claim to life, freedom, tolerance and justice – and no law, government, majority, religion, ideology or prejudice can ethically deny, even one individual, equal opportunity to enjoy them.
¨ I believe in the universal application of love, without regard for divisive ideologies that capitalize on differences in race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation.
¨ I believe in an uncompromising commitment to ethics, freedom, equity, equality, justice and tolerance for all. These values should mandate the character of our faith. Any faith, religion, scripture, church or institution, whose teachings or policies threaten the quality of other people’s lives, should be abandoned.
¨ I believe empathy is the most noble of all virtues. It is only by way of empathy with those suffering, disenfranchised or repressed that we can achieve equity in our treatment of others.
¨ I believe there is no higher authority than reason and critical thinking. To question is the answer. Spiritual growth cannot occur unless we continue the search for better answers from a variety of sources. Institutions using sophistry to nurture absolute dogmas only nurture intellectual arrogance, impeding spiritual growth.
¨ I believe demagogic and simplistic answers do not do adequately or equitably address complex problems.
¨ I believe in moral relativism. Absolute dogmas and inflexible rules fail to serve the interests of social justice.
¨ I believe there are only human solutions to human problems. If we cannot do it, it will not get done. Any reliance upon supernaturalism impedes human progress.
¨ I believe that a single well-substantiated fact, irreconcilable with a belief, is sufficient to prove that belief false.

Right On
So the reality was that we often think we have found happiness only to have our hopes and dreams dashed against the rocks of life. You hit the mark. Thanks for the great poem.

Extraordinary read
As always, the story was captivating, beginning to end. I did become confused for a time near the end but finally got it figured out. The length didn't bother me at all.

Unigue
Both the prose and the presentation were superb. Ditto all the other comments. Thanks for entertaining us with this gem. You have talent for thinking outside the square. We'll look for more good things from you.

Wow!
The pain is so real. I do hope this was not a true life experience for you. Without trying to get too philosophical I'll just say we felt your pain too. And that is all the proof I need to know that this is good stuff.

Evolving
True to reality and every person's life experience. We make mistakes but we cannot undo them. We are forced to go forward. I thought it was an excellent piece of prose. Keep up the good work.

Non-fiction
The story is a non-fiction piece in the sense that this event, as recounted, actually happened. The tragic experience of the character is also true. A few details experienced by this survivor are fiction since I could not possibly know this much detail.
I put the theological question at the end of the story because I am sick and tired of hearing people praise some god for saving them while ignoring the hundreds or even thousands who perished or suffered in natural disasters. For a change, you got to hear the reasonable questions a non-religious survivor might ask. "Where is the omnipotent, omni-benevolent god?" Pandering to the religious community, the media ensures these questions never make the news.

Agendas Rein Supreme
The agenda to make excuses in order to credit god with every good thing that humans do while denying god is responsible for anything bad that nature does is nothing more than sophistry, linquistic manipulations designed to deceive or frustrate clear thinking.
If I murder someone, or save them from drowning, it is not an act of some supernatural entity. People should get credit for what people do. And entities of the human imagination should not get any credit at all.

I'm Clueless
I tried very hard to figure it out and I failed. It was written well but I do not know what has happened here.
Perhaps the problem is with my lack of understanding of poetry.

Title article: LARGE EAR YOUNG MAN

Wonderful
This is true of the real world in which all of us have or have had defects we worried others would notice and ridicule. And it reflects our emotional response as well. Good job.

Mixed review
The story may have been well written but I was clueless throughout. I read all the other comments too. I think you write well but you leave most people scratching their head.
